How to Play Poople: Rules, Statistics and the Fastest Routes to POOP
Learn Poople's rules and use statistics from 415 solved puzzles to find shorter paths to POOP — the most common final words, typical path lengths and the hardest starts.
What is Poople?
Poople is a free daily word ladder at poople.io, invented by the creators' dad to keep the family busy on road trips. Every day you get a random four-letter starting word, and you need to reach POOP by changing exactly one letter at a time — every step has to be a real word.
Your result is counted in extra guesses: how many more steps you took than the shortest possible path. After each day the game shows yesterday's shortest path.
How long are Poople paths?
We solved all 415 puzzles from #1 to #415 with Poople's own word list. The average shortest path is 5.66 steps. 229 puzzles (55%) take exactly 5 steps, 134 take 6, and only 52 take 7 or more.
The hardest start so far was #388, ITCH, at 10 steps. ETCH (#177), QUAY (#181), OWNS (#197) and BUZZ (#351) each needed 9.
94 puzzles had exactly one shortest path, so on roughly one day in four there is no alternative route to a perfect score.
The most useful final words
In the shortest paths we found, the word just before POOP was most often COOP (73 puzzles), POMP (70), BOOP (57), LOOP (50), PLOP (44) and POOL (39), followed by HOOP and PROP.
That gives you a target: instead of aiming for POOP directly, aim for any of these words, then make the final change.
Strategy tips
Plan backwards from the end. If your start word already has an O in the second or third position, look for a route to an -OOP or -OOL word.
Get a P in the first position early, or aim for the double O — POOP shares letters with both PROP/PLOP and COOP/HOOP/LOOP families.
Vowel swaps open up the most new words, so when you are stuck, change a vowel first.
