Count a reconstructed board in four spatial groups
- The worked diagram reconstructs the 2026-11-01 Count board at the instant it appears using the official game's layout algorithm. Split at x = 400 and y = 250 on its 800 × 500 coordinate system.
- Count the upper-left region (16) and upper-right (17) separately; the upper half contains 33. Then count lower-left (21) and lower-right (19), giving 40 in the lower half.
- Add the four groups: 16 + 17 + 21 + 19 = 73. Assign each dot by its centre, so a dot near a dividing line is counted once.
- Test a tempting shortcut: double the left-half count (37 × 2 = 74). The right half actually contains 36, so this shortcut is off by 1 dots because the layout is not evenly split.
| Candidate / approach | Assessment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 73 | Exact grouped count | Four disjoint region counts sum to 73; no dot is shared between regions. |
| 74 | Rejected estimate | Doubling 37 assumes the other half also has 37; the actual other half has 36. |
| 74 | One-dot overcount | Would require an extra dot beyond the four complete disjoint groups. Recheck dots near x=400 or y=250 instead of rounding up. |
What this does and does not establish
- This is a study reconstruction, not a record of a human completing the timed game.
- A future change to the official layout algorithm requires revalidation.
